Dawn Mitchell came to Mrs. Holden's class to help students create their own Weather Poetry.

Here are some pictures of the poems they created:

After our students flew kites to see how the wind moved objects, they used the concept they learned from Mrs. Mitchell to write their own Kite poems.

Mentor Texts

Our culminating project required students to create their own weather forecasts. Students were asked to describe the expected weather for the day, the high/low temperature and a safety/clothing tip for their viewers.

Step #1- Identifying Weather Symbols
Students recorded the weather on their weather calendar for a little over two weeks

Step #2- Watch Weather Forecasts/Record Nightly Forecasts

Step #3- Watched a variety of forecasts off YouTube- these served as our "mentor texts"

***Students had the option to create circle map/noticings chart at their seat :)

Step #5- Students were given their weather project rubric & checklist

Step #6- Students divided into partner groups & began working on weather outline

Step #7- Students went on to create their scripts

It's Pouring Weather in Mrs. McAbee's Class

The kids in Mrs. McAbee's class have learned the ins and outs of weather.
1.  We have tracked the weather using weather calendards.  This allowed us to talk about the different weather symbols and tools that are used to describe the weather.  We read books, watch video clips, and observed the actual weather conditions.

2.  The students have created brochures describing the seasons.  They had to describe the weather, activities, and clothing in the season they chose.

2.  The students kept a weather journal.  They wrote about what the weather was like.  They has had weather poetry and short stories that were added to their weather journals.

3.  The students read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs  and then wrote their own versions of the story.

4.  The students also became meteorologists.  After watching and recording the weather for a week,  they had to give the forecast for a seven day period for our area.  Hopefully shortly I can upload a video of the students giving their forecasts.

Mrs. Hutchins' Weather Watchers!

We started our weather unit by creating a Weather noticings chart.  Eveyone in the class helped to create a chart about what we have already noticed about the weather.  We used this as a springboard to our month long observation of daily weather.

Mrs. Hutchins' class has been busy observing the daily weather and recording it on a calendar.  We learned to use weather symbols just like a real meteorologist does! The students then compared the different types of weather we obseved during a one month period.  We were really sad because we had no SNOW!

When we began discussing severe weather, students were able to use their background knowledge ( schema)  from our Roper Mountain field trip to discuss how a tornado forms.  Our class had the opportunity to make a " tornado in a bottle" at the Science Center.

After discussing and researching several types of weather, weather tools, and weather words, the students used an alphabox to help create their own personal weather ABC book.

Mrs. Linder's Magnificent Meteorologists

Mrs. Linder's friends researched different types of severe weather (tornado, tsunami, hurricane, lightning storm, thunderstorm). They  had to find out what exactly their weather was, why it was dangerous, how to stay safe if they were in the weather condition, and then illustrate a picture of the weather type. Then they created a poster with this information on it.

Second graders at Oakland Elementary have been very busy!   We have been learning all about weather.  We have learned about types of weather, weather tools, weather jobs, and weather safety.  Students have recorded weather, read about weather, watched weather forecast, written about weather and created their own weather forecasts.

Here's a link to take you to see Mrs. Allen's Marvelous Meterologists...
